What I learned from my First Aid for Mental Health course

So what is First Aid in Mental Health?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course that teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

Traditionally mental health is a taboo subject and one that is often avoided. However, in recent months and especially during the pandemic, mental health discussion is becoming more commonplace.

It is actually acknowledged in society and by employers that poor mental health is a growing issue for so many people. An accepting and embracing positive mental health culture is something employers are looking to build as we exit the pandemic.

We can improve our wellbeing by building these five steps into our day-to-day lives.

Connect

Connect with others through good relationships. Arrange to see friends or give someone in your family a call to catch up and reap the benefits afterwards.

Be active

Being physically active is not only good for your health and fitness, but it's also great for your mind and wellbeing. Moving daily in a way that feels great for you can boost your confidence and sense of accomplishment.

Keep learning

Building a sense of purpose through continuous learning like trying to cook something new can be really enjoyable and can be combined as a social activity with a loved one!

Give to others

Small acts of kindness towards others can boost your mood, and create positive feelings. Try saying thank you to show appreciation for something someone has done for you recently, paying for someone's coffee at the store, or doing some volunteer work in your local community.

Be mindful

Being present in your daily routine, and in your thoughts and feelings can make you more appreciative of the little things that happen in your day-to-day. It can positively change how you think about your life, and if you're so inclined, try a short morning meditation to start your day right!

This is what the NHS recommends based on evidence and research. If you give them a try, you may feel happier, more positive and able to get the most from life.
