What I learned from my First Aid for Mental Health course

Beyond Physical Strength: Nurturing Your Mental Wellbeing for a Stronger You

At Transform Personal Training, we believe true strength goes far beyond what you can lift or how far you can run. For busy professionals and active adults over 40, balancing demanding careers, family life, and personal goals often means mental wellbeing can take a backseat. Yet, just like physical health, our mental state profoundly impacts our ability to thrive.

The past few years have brought mental health conversations to the forefront, shifting it from a taboo subject to an essential part of overall health. Understanding and supporting mental wellbeing, both our own and that of those around us, is more critical than ever. This is precisely why our team recently undertook a First Aid for Mental Health course – to better support our community holistically.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course designed to equip individuals with the knowledge to identify, understand, and provide initial help to someone who might be experiencing a mental health issue. It’s about being prepared to offer practical support, much like physical first aid, until professional help can be accessed or the crisis resolves.

This training acknowledges that poor mental health is a growing concern, impacting individuals and workplaces alike. Cultivating an accepting and positive mental health culture is vital for sustainable wellbeing, allowing everyone to navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience.

The NHS-Recommended Five Steps to Wellbeing

Based on extensive evidence and research, the NHS recommends five simple, actionable steps we can integrate into our daily lives to significantly improve our mental wellbeing. These aren’t just feel-good suggestions; they are proven strategies for fostering a healthier mind.

1. Connect

Building strong, meaningful relationships is fundamental to our mental health. Human connection provides a sense of belonging and support, acting as a buffer against stress and loneliness. Make time for the people who matter.

Practical Tip: Schedule a regular phone call with a family member during your commute, or turn a solo walk into a catch-up with a friend. These acts contribute to your overall T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. framework by enhancing your Resilience (R) and Optimism (O) through social support.

2. Be Active

Physical activity isn’t just for your body; it’s a powerful tool for your mind. Moving regularly can significantly boost your mood, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem. The key is to find activities you genuinely enjoy.

Practical Tip: Whether it’s a brisk walk, a swim, or a Transform Personal Training session, find a way to incorporate movement that feels good to you. This step is central to the T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. approach, directly linking to Training (T), Activity (A), and Movement (M).

3. Keep Learning

Engaging your mind in new ways can provide a sense of purpose and achievement, fostering confidence and joy. Learning doesn’t have to be formal; it can be about personal growth and exploration.

Practical Tip: Try a new recipe, learn a few phrases in another language, or dive into a book on a subject that interests you. This cultivates your Optimism (O) and mental Flexibility (F) within your T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. journey.

4. Give to Others

Acts of kindness, big or small, are incredibly powerful for boosting your own mood. Helping others creates positive feelings, a sense of reward, and strengthens your community connections.

Practical Tip: Offer to help a colleague, pay a compliment, or simply say “thank you” to show appreciation. These actions enhance your Optimism (O) and build Resilience (R) by fostering positive interactions, aligning with the T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. principles.

5. Be Mindful

Being present in your daily life, noticing your thoughts and feelings without judgment, can profoundly change your perspective. Mindfulness helps you appreciate the small moments and manage stress more effectively.

Practical Tip: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, truly taste your food, or simply observe your surroundings. Even a short morning meditation can set a positive tone. This is a core component of effective Stress Management (S) in the T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. framework, also impacting your Rest (R) and Optimism (O).

Integrating these five evidence-based steps into your routine doesn’t require perfection; it’s about making consistent, realistic progress. By nurturing your mental wellbeing alongside your physical fitness, you’ll unlock a stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant you.
